Girls Flag Football
In 2022, the Minnesota Vikings partnered with Minneapolis Public Schools to pilot a middle school girls flag program. Three additional partner districts were added in 2023, and in 2024, there were eight (8) total districts in Minnesota working with the Vikings to provide middle school girls flag opportunities. To date, the Vikings have contributed over $300,000 to girls flag efforts statewide, reducing barriers to play through funding coaching staff, officials, transportation and facility costs, and registration fees. The Vikings are also working with high school programs throughout the state. Four teams just completed the inaugural season of high school girls flag football (La Crescent-Hokah, Rosemount, Pine Island, and Houston high schools), with over a dozen high schools set to play in spring of 2025.
Currently, 14 states have girls flag football sanctioned at the high school level. The NFL and Minnesota Vikings have a mutual goal of sanctioning girls flag football at the varsity level in all 50 states. Flag football is set to debut as an Olympic sport at the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
